Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you doing this scheme?
The existing surfacing is in poor condition and requires replacement before it becomes unsafe.
What does the work consist of?
Improvements involve the resurfacing and partial reconstruction of both carriageways on a 2.5 kilometre (1.5 miles) section of road between Whatton Prison and Elton Road bridge, strengthening the bridge over the River Smite at Whatton and renewing signs and road markings on various sections along the entire 21 kilometre (13 miles) route.
What restrictions will be in place?
There will be full closures of the A52 between Bingham and Barrowby on most weekday nights and full 24 hour closures between the same two points on three weekends. The weekend closures will take place from 10pm Friday to 6am Monday on 8th to 11th February, 15th to 18th February and 22nd to 25th February.
The A52 will be closed to all through traffic between Bingham and Barrowby during the closures, although controlled local access will be maintained. Signed diversion routes will be in place to assist drivers.
In order to minimise disruption to road users, all of the resurfacing work involved will be done between 8pm and 6am, and at weekends, when traffic flows are lightest.
What is the diversion route?
Traffic will be diverted from the Saxondale roundabout at Bingham northbound up the A46 to Newark, then the A1 southbound to the junction with the A52 at Barrowby, or vice versa.
Access to Cromwell Road, Conery Lane, Old Grantham Road (East) and Old Grantham Road (West) in Whatton will be restricted on the nights resurfacing is carried out. Local diversions will be clearly signed.
Who is doing the work? How much is it costing?
The work will be carried out by Carillion and supervised by AMScott on behalf of the Highways Agency. The scheme will cost £2 million.
Will you be working at night and at weekends?
Yes. The work involves overnight lane closures and temporary traffic lights as well as full closures of the A52 between Bingham and Barrowby on some weekday nights. Full 24-hour closures will take place on three weekends in February, these are scheduled for between 10pm on Friday and 6am on Monday on 8 to 11, 15 to 18 and 22 to 25 February.
Have you told local people?
Yes. Residents, businesses, Whatton Prison and bus companies have been informed of the restrictions.
Will my buses be affected?
Yes. Passengers needing more information about how the changes will affect their bus services should contact the bus company direct.
