The Project

M5 Wigmore Viaduct, Concrete Repairs and Cathodic Protection

Where

Wigmore Viaduct is on the north side of Birmingham a key connection between the M5 and M6 motorways.

When

The works started started on 6 May 2008 and will last approximately 15 months.

What are we doing?

This maintenance project is for the repair of nine concrete crossbeams that support the carriagways above.  Temporary steelwork will be erected to support the above carriageways whilst the supports are repaired with replacement concrete and the installation of a Cathodic Protection system to prevent future deterioration.  There will be single lane running and traffic lights on Wigmore Lane until approxumately December 2008.

The proposed hours of working will be as follows:

  • Monday to Friday 08:00 hrs to 19:00 hrs
  • Saturday 08:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs

Overnight closures of Wigmore Lane will be required for the installation and removal of the traffic management.

Why do we need to do this work?

The project is the latest of a series of substructure repair schemes which form part of the Highways Agency's ongoing programme of maintenance works on the Midland Links Motorway Viaducts which carry the M6 and M5 Motorways. The repairs are being carried before the condition of the concrete deteriorates to a point where they may become difficult or more expensive to repair. A team of specialist structural engineers determine the best time to repair each structure to minimise disruption and to make the best use of tax payer's money.
