The A13 in Essex was identified as a hazardous site and a number of accident cluster sites were identified on this route. Work to improve safety on the main carriageway and the slip roads of the A13, where it meets the M25 at Junction 30, A1306 Wennington, A1012, A1089 and A126 Lakeside, started on Monday 28 January 2008 and was completed by the end of March 2008.

During this time, new anti-skid surfacing and a number of measures including new road markings and signs, together with improved safety barriers were installed.

Some of the slip roads needed to be closed while work was carried out, for which fully signed diversion routes were in place, and two laybys between A1306 Wennington roundabout and the M25 Junction 30 were closed throughout the work in order to provide a safe working area for roadworkers.
