The Project

From Monday 4th February 2008 an improvement scheme commenced at the junction of the A500 Queensway and A34 Newcastle Road in Hanford near Stoke-on-Trent. This scheme will reduce congestion for all motorists travelling through this location and improve pedestrian and cyclist facilities.

In order to achieve these goals we will be making several changes including;

  • installation of MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) traffic signals across the junction,
  • some re-alignment of the carriageways,
  • resurfacing of the junction,
  • recommission of the existing pedestrian subway to be replaced by modern pedestrian and cyclist crossing facilities,
  • improvements to signing, white lining and street lighting,
  • re-landscaping of the whole junction in order to improve its appearance.

In addition to this Highways Agency scheme, we have been working closely with Stoke-on-Trent City Council in order to maximise benefits to the travelling public by linking our improvements to works due to run concurrently at the junction of the A34 with Mayne Street to the South.

This co-operation and linking of the schemes will not only improve journey times through this coridor, but will also mean that disruption to road users during construction will be kept to a minimum.

Work is scheduled to be completed by August 2008.
