The Project
Where
The site area is located at Oldbury beneath the M5 Motorway, between Junctions 1 and 2.
When
The works commenced on 3 March 2008 and will be completed by early July 2008.
What are we doing?
The project consists of replacing the existing protective paint system to the structural steelwork, which supports the M5 Motorway above. Beneath the motorway lies the Birmingham Canal - Wolverhampton Level. To facilitate access, scaffolding will be erected along the section of viaduct. To ensure the safety of the public is maintained, the towpath between Stone Street and Manchester Street and from the intersection of the Titford Canal junction to Tat Bank Road will be closed. Further details on Towpath closures can be obtained from the British Waterways website.
Why do we need to do this work?
These works will prevent significant deterioration of the steelwork that supports the M5 motorway. If the structures are left to deteriorate, more significant repairs would be required in the future which may require closure of the motorway.
Traffic Management
The hours of day time working will be as follows:
Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:00 hours
Saturday 08:00 to 14:00 hours
Alternate Sundays from 08:00 to 16:00 hours
There will be occasional night time working.
Scheme Facts and Frequently Asked Questions
The existing paint system is approaching the end of its life and requires replacement to prevent the deterioration of the structural steelwork.
By ensuring preventative maintenance is carried out the risk for any major maintenance is reduced significantly.
What is the reason (for this work)?
To maintain the structural integrity of the Motorway Viaduct.
What would happen if you do not do this work?
The structures would deteriorate further. Traffic Management and weight restrictions would need to be imposed until major repairs could be carried out.
