The Project

Work started on 3 March 2008 on a series of improvements to the carriageway, safety barriers and lighting columns along the A56 between Huncoat, the Rising Bridge roundabout and junction 8 of the M65.

The scheme took place in two phases.

The first phase involved resurfacing the slip roads and a 1km section of both the north and southbound carriageways from Huncoat, at the junction with the A679 (Burnley Road) towards the Rising Bridge junction with the A680 (Accrington).  This has now been completed.

The second phase of the work started on 31 March and during this work new safety barriers were installed and "passively safe" lighting columns which minimise damage to vehicles if hit were fitted, together with resurfacing of the carriageway in both directions.  This has now been completed.
