The Project
This section of the A38 to the south of Exeter was adapted from the old turnpike road to its present form in 1972. The surface is now showing signs of fatigue and requires replacement. The eastbound carriageway will be resurfaced with low noise material in time for the summer holiday traffic season. The opportunity will also be taken to upgrade the safety barrier, improve drainage from the road and upgrade the road signs.
In order to minimise disruption to traffic, the works will be carried out overnight, between 8.00pm and 6.00am the following morning.
Work is scheduled to take place between May and July 2008.
Traffic Management
There will be a combination of traffic management measures, including a contra-flow, with eastbound traffic diverted on to the westbound carriageway, and some convoy working. During one of the phases, the eastbound traffic will be diverted routed via Kingsteignton and the A380. The laybys and some slip roads will require temporary closures during the course of the project.
There will be a speed restriction of 40mph through the works for the duration of the contract, and this will be in place 24/7.
