The Project

Where

The work will take place on the M6 between J10a (Essington) and J13 (Dunston), on the M54 from the M6 (J10a) to J2 (Wolverhampton) and the M6 Toll Road approach to the M6 (J11a).

When

The work has been split into 3 sections: M6 J10a - 11 & M54, J11-12 & M6 Toll and J12-J13.

The works started on 3 November 2008 and we will be working north from J10a in the 3 sections, the last of which is expected to commence by July 2010.

What are we doing ?

The works comprise the installation of portal and cantilever gantries for Variable Message Signs and associated MIDAS loops.

New Advanced Direction Signing will be installed on the northbound approaches to J11 and J12.

Why do we need to do this work ?

The provision of new signals and MIDAS on these stretches of the M6 and M54 will complete the automatic signalling installation in these areas, providing safer journeys and informed travellers.

The Provision of new Signals and MIDAS on the M6 Toll Road is for speed equalisation, ensuring that M6 Toll road users are aware of any slow moving or stationary traffic on the M6 after J11a.

Traffic Management

During daytime hours works will be carried out from the hardshoulder only.  Lane/carriageway/slip road closures will be carried only at night.  For certain night-time closures a mandatory 50mph speed limit will be in place, for the safety of both the workforce and road users.

There will be a number of overnight closures required to erect equipment.  Plenty of notice will be given prior to overnight closures and diversion routes will be well signed.  the dates of overnight closures will be chosen to avoid dates of local and regional events which are likely to generate a lot of traffic.
