In June and July 2008, we demolished the old eastbound bridge deck, and started work on building the new one.

The demolition had to be carried out as quietly and cleanly as possible to avoid inconvenience and discomfort to local residents and users of the A3047 beneath the bridge. To achieve this, we cut the old bridge deck into ‘slices’ with a big disc cutting machine, and then lifted the sections on to a low loader to be taken away for recycling.

We then placed the steel girders to carry the new bridge deck. The girders are purposely left unpainted – a system known as ‘weathering steel’. This has the advantages of low maintenance, as it does not require repainting, and leaves a more natural looking finish, with a ‘rust’ effect.

This operation was repeated for the westbound bridge deck and this was completed in September 2008.  Following this the temporary bridge was removed and final works to the site are now underway.

Strengthening works on the nearby Gilberts Coombe and Blowinghouse viaducts are also now completed.

Additional work to the street lighting will be carried out in early 2009.
