The Project

What is happening?

The Highways Agency will be replacing and upgrading the equipment at the traffic light controlled junction at the eastern end of A259 King Offa Way. The works involve installing a new ducting system, replacing the traffic lights, reconstructing two traffic islands and installing additional areas of tactile paving at the new controlled crossing points.

When will the works take place?

The scheme started on 28th April 2008 for approximately 12 weeks. Works will be carried out from Monday to Saturday each week during daytime hours except where stated.

For the safety of road users and the workforce it will be necessary to temporarily close lanes and have diversions at various times whilst the works are being carried out. Whilst the local road closures are in place there will be a number of signed diversion routes in operation. Diversions will be needed even when works aren't being carried out to ensure road user's safety because of excavations in the road.

Local footways may also be closed whilst works are taking place. Pedestrians will be diverted to other routes at these times.

For the first five weeks works are being carried out on the footway but there may be times when weekday lane closures around the junction will be needed for the safety of road users and the workforce.

From Tuesday 27 May there will be overnight lane closures on the eastbound A259 King Offa Way for ten nights. From Monday 9 June there will be overnight lane closures on the westbound A259 King Offa Way for nine nights.

There will then be approximately three weeks of works that involve diversion routes. After this time completion  works will be mainly on the footway and there may be some lane closures needed. During this time there will be four- way temporary traffic lights on the junction as the traffic lights themselves are being installed.

Some delays to the works may occur in the event of severe weather. Should this happen then it will be necessary to reschedule the works for a later date.

Why are we doing the works?

The existing traffic signals at this junction are coming to the end of their service life and need to be changed and upgraded. Upgrading the equipment will allow all of the traffic signals to be synchronised and optimised. This will result in fewer delays and improved journey times.

How will the works be carried out?

The present traffic light system relies on all traffic lights being operational; when the first traffic light is disconnected the whole system stops working. Therefore there will be temporary traffic lights controlling the junction until the new lights have been commissioned.
