The Project

Work is underway to install a new concrete Quick Moveable Barrier (QMB), to deliver more reliable journey times during Operation Stack at Dover ports, Roads Minister Tom Harris has announced.

Work started on site on, Tuesday 13 May and will last for approximately 14 weeks. As well as installing the new barriers along the central reservation, the work will change the road layout on sections of the M20 between junctions 11 and 12.

Once the work is complete, the concrete barriers can be quickly and safely deployed using a special vehicle during phase 1 of Operation Stack. The barriers will create a contra-flow on the London-bound carriageway while commercial vehicles await access to Dover on the coast-bound carriageway. This will improve journey times on the M20 during Operation Stack and reduce pressure on the A20 diversion route.

The work will involve changes to the road layout on sections of the Londonbound carriageway of the M20 between junctions 12 and 11a to provide space for the barrier. The layout of the entry slip roads on the Londonbound carriageway at junction 12 and 11a and the coastbound entry slip road at junction 11 will also be revised.

Traffic Management

To limit delays, work will take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and at least two lanes will remain open between 6am to 8pm each day. Hard shoulder running may be used where necessary to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Overnight, there will be occasional closures of the entry and exit slip roads at junction 11 and junction 12 on selected dates. These closures will take place between 8pm and 6am when traffic is expected to be lowest, and only one slip road will be closed at any time. There will be fully signed diversion routes in place for affected traffic.

For the safety of road users and road workers a 50 mph speed limit will be in place throughout the work.
