The Project

M25 Bell Common Tunnel Refurbishment is a major maintenance scheme to replace mechanical and electrical equipment that was installed when the tunnel was constructed in the early 1980's. The refurbishment will also upgrade the safety equipment in the tunnel to current European Standards. Construction commenced on the 24th October 2008 with completion scheduled for March 2010.

  • There will be a reduced temporary speed limit of 40mph for the contraflow stages.
  • Three lanes will remain available during day time hours.
  • A free recovery service will be in place.
  • Details of current lane closures can be found on the Traffic Management page which are updated on a weekly basis.
  • More information about the scheme is available on the Frequently Asked Questions page.

December 2009 update

Refurbishment works on Bell Common Tunnel are almost 2 months ahead of programme.

Costain, the works contractor, have completed the structural refurbishment of the tunnel and have started Phase 5 of the programme.  Phase 5 has 3 lanes of traffic running through each bore, instead of contraflow, and the temporary speed limit has been increased to 50mph.

Commissioning of the Tunnel safety systems will be carried out during this phase and is expected to last until spring 2010. Costain apologises for any inconvenience caused by these works. They will continue to do all that they can to minimise the impact of the works on the local community and are endeavouring to complete these works as quickly and quietly as possible.

If you require any further information or need to contact Costain, please leave a message on 08456 037985 or e-mail Ann Gout the Public Relations Manager at BCTinfo@costain.com and one of the team will contact you.
