The Project
What is happening?
In order to reduce levels of noise for local residents living alongside the M20 motorway between junction 4 and 5 on the Londonbound carriageway we are replacing the existing noise barrier with a new higher version. Works will include some vegetation clearance, the removal of the old 2.5 metre concrete barrier and installation a 4 metre timber barrier from Hall Road to Teapot Lane footbridge.
These works are part of a series of noise barrier works on both the Londonbound and coastbound carriageway between junctions 4 and 5. Some of these have already been completed and these works are the first of a further three phases that are due to be carried out before the end of February 2009.
How will these works be carried out?
We will complete the majority of the vegetation clearance before starting removal of the existing concrete barrier. This will then be completely removed along the whole section before the new timber barrier is installed.
Throughout the works there will be narrow running lanes in place and a 50mph speed limit on a three mile section of the M20 adjacent to the area of work. This traffic management is essential to ensure the safety of both road users and the workforce while the works are being carried out.
When will the works take place?
Clearance of vegetation will last for approximately three weeks. Once this is completed the main works to install the new barrier will begin. The total duration of the works is expected to be no longer than eight weeks.
Due to the nature of the works the vegetation clearance and removal of the existing barrier may be noisy but the majority of works will be undertaken during the daytime between 08.30 and 17.00.
There will be some overnight works between 20.00 and 05.00 for the installation and removal of traffic management but we will do our upmost to keep noise to a minimum at all times.
