The Project
The A19 is a strategic route that provides an alternative to the A1 between North Yorkshire and Tyneside. The A19 runs through North Tyneside and is a dual carriageway around the north-eastern limits of the city of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. The A1058 Coast Road is also a dual carriageway linking Newcastle city centre to the west, with Tynemouth to the east. The Coast Road junction is located where the A1058 passes over the A19, approximately 1.5 miles north of the Tyne Tunnel Crossing.
Currently approximately 69,000 vehicles travel through the junction every day. The junction suffers severe congestion at peak times and has an accident rate 50 per cent higher that the national average. Traffic flows through the Coast Road junction are forecast to be approximately 85,500 vehicles every day by 2031, due in part to the opening of the second Tyne Tunnel, and this will result in longer delays and more severe congestion if the junction is not improved.
In 2002 the Tyneside Area Multi Modal Study (TAMMS) recommended that the A1058 Coast Road Junction on the A19 be improved. The scheme has been considered a priority since 2006 by the North East Regional Transport Board who support the scheme's continued development as part of an overall route strategy for the A19.
The proposed improvements aim to:
- Improve journey times and increase capacity; and
- Improve safety for both road uses and local residents
A proposed interim improvement which involves widening the circulatory carriageway and its approaches, to improve capacity, is expected to be in place by the time the new Tyne Crossing is fully operational in 2011. The interim scheme will deliver substantial benefits in the short term, however, the proposed major improvement is required to maintain an acceptable level of service at this key location.
