The Project

Scheme Background

The roundabouts at Hopgrove are located to the north east of the City of York, where the Outer Ring Road meets traffic heading along the A64 from the A1 and West Yorkshire towards the East Coast, and form a junction between the A64 trunk road, the A1237 and the A1036. There were significant peak period delays associated with the previous junction arrangements which affected commuters in weekday peeks, but also during the summer holiday period when daily flows could be up to one third higher than average. The resultant queues adversely affected journey times, making them less reliable as well as leading to a number of collisions. These problems were likely to have been exacerbated with background traffic growth and pressures associated with land use changes in the locality.

The improvement works were centred on the A64 approaches to Hopgrove roundabout, the A1237 link road between Hopgrove roundabout and Malton Road roundabout and the A1036 and A1237 approaches to Malton Road roundabout.

Scheme Description

The scheme consisted of installing traffic signal control at both the A64 Hopgrove roundabout and the A1237/A1036 Malton Road roundabout.

The northbound A64(T) approach was widened to 4 lanes approximately 150m south of Hopgrove roundabout, with the two left hand lanes for the left turn manoeuvre and the two right hand lanes for the A64(T) northbound via the circulatory carriageway.  The A64(T) southbound approach was widened to 3 lanes approximately 100m north of Hopgrove roundabout, with 4 lanes around the eastern half of the circulatory carriageway: 2 lanes for straight-ahead movement and 2 lanes for the right turn movement.  The circulatory carriageway was widened internally and a maintenance area constructed within the central island.  A maintenance area was also provided at the eastern end of the link road central reserve.

A permanent 40mph speed limit has been imposed on the circulatory carriageway, whilst permanent 50mph & a 40mph speed limits have been imposed on the northbound and southbound approaches to Hopgrove roundabout. There is a 40mph limit on the A1237 on the approach to Malton Road roundabout.  The link road between Hopgrove and Malton Road roundabout's is subject to a 40mph speed limit.  Speed limits on the A1036 and A1237 exit will remain unchanged. The A1237 and A1036 were widened on the approaches to the Malton Road Roundabout to provide sufficient capacity at the new traffic signals.

Retaining walls were constructed along approximately 120m of the A64(T) northbound approach and approximately 80m of the A64(T) southbound approach.  A culvert extension was required on the A64(T) northbound approach, approximately 50m south of the junction, where Old Foss Beck runs under the carriageway.

The works commenced on 24th November 2008 and were completed on 7th October 2009, at an estimated cost of £7.12m.
