The Project
The Highways Agency are carrying out essential maintenance to the central reserve and drainage system on the M4 between Baydon and Membury Services. The existing steel barrier and drainage system are reaching the end of their serviceable life, and require replacement. The existing steel barrier will be replaced by a concrete central barrier.
Preliminary works
Preliminary works to the drainage system and safety barrier were undertaken during December 2009, under a series of off peak lane closures.
Main works
The main works commenced early January 2010, and narrow lanes have been installed whilst works to the central reserve take place. For the safety of both road users and the workforce, there will be a 50mph speed restriction in operation 24 hours a day. This will be enforced with average speed cameras. A free 24 hour roadside vehicle recovery service will also available in order to minimise delays and disruption for road users as a result of breakdowns.
Traffic management is on both carriageways over a distance of approximately 4.5km between Ramsbury Road and Baydon Road Overbridges, with 3 lanes operating on both carriageways during peak times.
Works are scheduled to be completed by the beginning of March 2010, weather permitting.
