The Project

The A1(M) Hatfield Tunnel Refurbishment is a major maintenance scheme to replace mechanical and electrical equipment that was installed when the tunnel was constructed in the early 1980's. Safety equipment in the tunnel will be upgraded to comply with current European Standards. Construction started in June 2009 and is expected to last 2 years.

Latest news

Work to refurbish the A1(M) Hatfield Tunnel continues. The second phase of the two-year refurbishment started on Monday 27 July. During this stage, which is expected to be completed in May 2010, the northbound tunnel will be closed. A two lane contraflow with narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit 24 hours a day will operate on the southbound carriageway. Drivers should expect moderate delays during this phase. A free recovery service will be in place.

Please see Traffic Management page for details of specific overnight closures.
