Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Why were the works being carried out?
The tunnels mechanical and electrical equipment installed at the time of construction had reached the end of its design life and needed to be replaced in line with the current standards.
What was involved?
The lighting, power supply and emergency equipment were replaced. The ventilation was upgraded and new safety and monitoring equipment installed. This is now linked to the new control systems in the Highways Agency's Regional Control at South Mimms.
How long did the work take?
Construction lasted 2 years.
What did you do to publicise this scheme to road users?
As part of our campaign to keep the public informed we held exhibitions, produced newsletters and regular updates. We regularly updated the Highways Agency website with information about the project and liaised with the media. A Start of Works Exhibition was held on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th March at the Ramada Hotel Hatfield.
What were the key messages?
- Plan your journey before setting off,
- Consider alternative routes,
- Allow extra time for your journey,
- Drive safely and obey temporary speed limit that will be in place for both the safety of the road users and the workforce,
If you didn't do the work what would be the implications?
The tunnel safety equipment would have become increasingly difficult to maintain. This would have inevitably resulted in unplanned maintenance closures.
Was this section of the A1(M) still open?
Yes. The Motorway remained open with at least two lanes of traffic in each direction during day time hours. Junction 3 and 4 slip roads remained open but the number of lanes available was restricted. .
Did you be divert traffic onto local roads?
No, through traffic did not need to leave the motorway
Why couldn't the work be carried out overnight and at weekends?
The scale of the work was too great.
Was there a vehicle recovery service?
A free vehicle recovery service was provided within the road works during the construction period. CCTV cameras were installed on the motorway to support the management of incidents.
Why is tunnel ventilation needed?
Under normal conditions the tunnel ventilates through the action of passing vehicles. When traffic is moving slowly the air quality can quickly deteriorate and in these conditions mechanical ventilation is required.
In the event of an incident involving a tunnel fire, the ventilation system will be required to keep smoke and hot gasses away from tunnel users whilst the tunnel is being evacuated.
