An automatic queue warning and signing system has been installed on the A14 Trunk Road. The scheme includes Variable Message Signs (VMS) on cantilever structures and traffic queue detection loops installed in the road surfac on the A14 and also on parts of the A11, A45 and A12. Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) has also been installed in strategic locations along the route.
Construction of this scheme is complete, as is the commissioning of Section 1 the western part of the A14. The commissioning of Sections 2 and 3 is nearing completion. When all of the equipment is fully commissioned the roadside equipment will provide drivers with an automatic safety system warning them of any traffic problems ahead. Our control room operators will also be able to set messages whilst keeping abreast of traffic conditions via the dynamic CCTV.
Work started on 13th July 2009 and construction is now complete. The work was split into three sections and took place in three phases.
- Section 1 - A14 between the M1 J19 and A14 J14: Complete Autumn 2010
- Section 2 - A14 J36 and A14 J45: Complete Spring 2011
- Section 3 - A14 J52 and J14 J62: Complete Autumn 2011
Scheme Status
- 47 CCTV cameras installed
- 232 MIDAS traffic detectors installed
- 71 electronic (VMS) message signs installed
All equipment will be fully operational by February 2012
Traffic management arrangement
Very few closures were required to complete the scheme. Commissioning is well under way and no further traffic management is required.
Further information would be released in advance of any overnight closures and diversion routes will be well signed. The dates of overnight closures will be scheduled to avoid dates of local and regional events in order to avoid disruption due to the works.
Please note that this information is not updated in real time. Please check Traffic England for the latest information and current traffic conditions.
