  • Link between the M25/London, the Midlands and the North of England
  • Often congested at peak times
  • Problems where traffic leaves the M1, particularly at J11 and 12 northbound
  • Serves Luton Airport

Facts about hard shoulder running and the M1 Junctions 10 to 13

  • This section of motorway is 25km long
  • Over 135,000 vehicles use this section of motorway every day
  • There will be over 70 gantries
  • There will be 37 emergency refuge areas

When will it be introduced?

Construction is due to begin in autumn 2009 and will take approximately 3 years.

During construction works 3 lanes of traffic will be maintained at peak times.

Junctions 11 and 12 improvements

As part of the M1 Junctions 10 to 13 Improvement we also intend to provide additional capacity at Junctions 11 and 12. A separate public consultation will be held on this in summer 2009.
