M3 Junctions 3 to 2 Eastbound Mobile VMS Scheme
M3 Junctions 3 to 2 Eastbound Mobile VMS Scheme
The Project
The M3 between Junctions 3 and 2 was indentified as having a higher number of nose-to-tail collisions on the eastbound approach to M3 Junction 2/ M25 Junction 12 due to queuing back from the junction onto the main carriageway of the M3.
This scheme involved the installation of a mobile "Queue Ahead" Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) on the approach to M3 Junction 2.
The scheme utilised two portable trailers - one sensor and one variable message sign. Both trailers are solar powered with battery backup and also have mains power to ensure that the safety critical system is always operational and in optimal condition.
The trailer's solar system uses the latest innovative technology and with its battery backup it is capable of fully autonomous operation for at least 20 days without power.
The sensor trailer uses a microwave detector to detect the presence of queuing traffic and then once detected signals the portable VMS to display "Queue Ahead" to warn approaching drivers of the slow moving / stationary vehicles.
