The Project

The Highways Agency completed major maintenance and improvement works on the A12 between Hatfield Peverel and Witham in Essex.   The scheme was originally planned to be complete by the end of April 2010 but a substantial increase in demand for asphalt nationally delayed supplies to the site. Works were completed at the end of June 2010.

Where did the work take place?

On the A12 north and southbound in Essex between the Witham south junction (J21) and Hatfield Peverel (J20b)

Why was the work necessary?

The concrete road surface was reaching the end of its useful life and needed to be replaced.  The road has been resurfaced with noise reducing asphalt.

Visibility for traffic merging onto the A12 at the Hatfield Peverel and Witham South junctions has been improved by altering the carriageway levels and widening into the existing verge and central reserves.  Junction 21, Witham South has also been improved with the construction of a new southbound lane between Witham South and Hatfield Peverel. The slip road runs directly into the new lane giving drivers more time to merge into A12 traffic.

In addition, the north and southbound carriageways have been widened to provide hardstrips which provide additional room for broken down vehicles, reduce minor incident-related congestion and allow extension of street lighting, all to improve safety at the junctions.

The existing footway and cycleway between the two junctions has also been refurbished.
