The Project

Work on Portfield Railway Bridge, which carries the A27 over the West Coastway railway line to replace the expansion joints on the bridge and install a new safety barrier took place  from 8pm on Friday 24 September until 6am on Monday 27 September 2010 . Brick work on the bridge was also maintained and the westbound carriageway over the bridge was completely resurfaced and re-waterproofed.

The bridge was closed to westbound traffic, eastbound traffic on the A27 was unaffected by the work.

While the closure was in place, traffic heading westbound on the A27 was diverted onto the southbound A29 at the Fontwell roundabout to join the A259 at Bognor Regis. From here they followed the A259 westbound before rejoining the A27 at Bognor roundabout. The diversion route was fully signed and the A27 between Fontwell Roundabout and Portfield Bridge remained open for access.

Work was carried out on the eastbound carriageway in 2009, before sustained rainy weather in October and November saw the rest of the work postponed.
