M6 Hardshoulder Strengthening Works
M6 Hardshoulder Strengthening Works
The Project
The Highways Agency carried out hard should strenthening works on sections of the M6 in the West Midlands and Staffordshire from September 2009 to May 2010. The work form part of the Highways Agency's managed motorways programme and would enable the future operation of peak period hard should running on the M6, similar to that already in use on the M42 at Solihull.
Works took place between M6 junctions 5 (Castle Bromwich) and 8 (M5) and between junctions 10A (M54) and 16 (Stoke-on-Trent North). The strenthening works have extended over 160 lane km of hard shoulder and will cost £58m, funded as part of the Department for Transport's fiscale stimulus package. The works have been carried out in three phases and incorporated other essential ongoing maintenance.
The work was completed on 11 May 2010.
