The Project

The system was operational from 17 May 2011 and variable speed limits became mandatory and enforced in summer 2011.

Why the M1J6A-10?

The M1 is one of the busiest motorways in Britain and is a strategic link between London, the Midlands and the North.  The section between Junction 6A and 10 is approximately 10 miles long stretching from the M25 to Luton.  The implementation of variable mandatory speed limits on the M1 junctions 6A to 10 will improve traffic flow, reduce accidents and reduce carbon emissions.

What are drivers currently seeing?

Drivers will see thirty northbound and thirty one southbound gantries over the 9.4 mile (15km) stretch of road displaying mandatory speed restrictions. These speed restrictions are in place for safety reasons, advising drivers of traffic conditions on the road ahead.

What is a Controlled Motorway?

A Controlled Motorway is designed to tackle the issue of local congestion on the motorway by keeping traffic moving. The system works through adjusting mandatory speed limits using traffic sensors buried in the road surface, which are able to detect the speed and flow of traffic. It works automatically and includes signs to inform drivers of the reasons for the changes. These mandatory speed limits will be enforced by Home Office approved enforcement cameras, and penalties will be issued by Hertfordshire Police.  Fixed signage on main carriageways and Slip roads will inform motorists when they are entering and leaving the Controlled Motorway area.

Benefits for you:

  • Reduced congestion
  • Provides more reliable journey times
  • Reduced frequency of accidents
  • Reduced carbon emissions
  • Reduced driver stress
