Current Position
In 2008, we proposed a scheme to fully refurbish the A27 Southerham railway bridge.  The work proposed included waterproofing, resurfacing, replacement of joints, concrete repairs and painting of the steel bearing. Construction began in during 2009, with work to resurface the Eastbound lane being completed. However works were delayed by bad weather, and were then postponed to avoid causing problems for a replacement bus service for Network Rail. Work re-started in 2010, when a central reserve barrier was replaced.

The project was then placed on hold while we put forward a bid for funding the remainder of the works. However the bridge is at present in reasonable condition, and the remaining works were not considered a priority when balanced against other schemes. As such, funding was not awarded at this time and the project has been withdrawn from this year's programme of works. In the meantime the bridge remains safe to use and is subject to our normal inspection routine. We will bid for funding again in the forthcoming financial year.
