The Project

The skidding resistance of the concrete carriageway and the safety barrier and drainage systems has been brought up to current standards. This will help to improve safety on this busy stretch of the trunk road network which carries many HGVs using the Port of Felixstowe. Remedial works to several underbridges will also be carried out.   Works were completed in June 2010.

What work was done?

The skidding resistance of the concrete carriageway has been improved using a purpose-built machine to grind shallow longitudinal grooves in the surface of the road.  This technique is relatively new to the UK but used for several years in the United States and Europe.  The 'grooving' produces a surface texture to the road which gives good skidding resistance. It also has the advantage of reducing tyre noise and surface water spray significantly, about as much as the quieter asphalts used nowadays.  This is good news for both drivers and local residents.

At the same time, the Agency installed new traffic information technology including vehicle detectors in the road surface, TV cameras, and variable message signs as part of a major technology upgrade on the A14.
