The Project

The A42 is a busy North East to South West network link, which, due to its strategic importance, is one of only a few non-motorway routes in England to be patrolled by Highways Agency Traffic Officers.

The scheme commenced on the 12th April 2010, was completed on the 18th March 2011, and involved the installation of Variable Message Signs (VMS) and closed circuit television (CCTV) between A42/M42 J11 (Appleby Magna) and M1 J23A (Long Whatton).

The VMS give information to drivers on the status of the road and adjoining road network, improving journey time and reducing congestion. The 17 new CCTV cameras are being used by the Highways Agency East Midlands Regional Control Centre for monitiring traffic conditions and coordinating assistance and support services when dealing with incidents.
