The Project Control Framework
This framework sets out how we, together with the Department for Transport, manage and deliver major road improvement projects.
M6 J32-37 Fibre Regrade
M6 J32-37 Fibre Regrade
Where was the project located?
The project was located on the M6 at junctions 32-37.
Why was the scheme needed?
A more robust infrastructure was required in an important trunk area where higher than average driving speeds often coincide with adverse weather conditions in remote areas.
What work was carried out?
Work was carried out to replace the old communication wiring system on the M6 in Lancashire and Cumbria with a new optical fibre network.
How did this benefit road users?
In addition to the benefits of reducing technology faults to the existing safety-critical equipment in the area, the fibre will provide additional capacity for future increased provision of traffic technology solutions such as CCTV, MIDAS (Motorway Incident Detection & Automatic Signalling), adverse weather detection equipment and Driver Information Signing.
These technologies contribute toward improving safety, journey time reliability and providing better information to road users so they can make informed decisions, which are all key objectives of the Highways Agency.
How do I find out more information?
If you have any queries about this project you should contact the Highways Agency Information Line by emailing ha_info@highways.gsi.gov.uk or calling 0300 123 5000.
