The Project
The Highways Agency has been monitoring the existing viaduct carrying the M6 southbound over the M1 for several years due to its deteriorating condition. The ongoing monitoring identified a need to replace the viaduct.
Owing to its important strategic location on the highway network, it was given a high priority for replacement as there would be severe disruption to the network if it became unserviceable. A decision was taken to replace the viaduct at the earliest opportunity prior to commencement of the proposed M1 Junction 19 Improvement scheme.
The replacement structure has been built within the existing highway boundary, south of the present viaduct, allowing the network to remain operational while the new structure was being built.
Scheme Details
Work commenced on the 12th July 2010 and is expected to be completed by Spring 2012.
The new viaduct has been built alongside the original structure which was demolished between midnight on Friday 6 January 2012 and midday on Sunday 8 January 2012 during M1 and M6 closures. Further details of the demolition can be found in the closures leaflet on the Publications page.
Traffic Management
Two lanes will be kept available through the junction in both directions on both the M6 and the M1, with a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of road users. See the Traffic Management page for further details.
