Where was the project located?
The project took place on a 3km (1.8 mile) stretch of the M4 midway between junctions 16 and 17.

Why was the scheme needed?
A number of bridges were identified as being 'at risk' of structural damage due to their construction in the event of being struck by errant vehicles. This needed to be remedied by adding concrete barriers in front of the bridge piers.

What work was carried out?
We completed work to install new concrete barriers in front of three bridges and connected them to the existing road side barriers. We also made some alterations to the existing drainage to enable the barrier to be constructed in the correct location.

How did this benefit road users?
These barriers will protect the bridge piers from serious damage in the event of a vehicle strike. This reduces disruption to the travelling public caused by structural inspections and repairs in the event of a vehicle impact.

How do I find out more information?
