Preferred Route Announcement
A30 Fingle Glen Junction Improvement
The preferred route has been announced for Fingle Glen Grade Separated Junction, which lies on the A30 trunk road to the east of Tedburn St Mary.
The existing Fingle Glen junction provides access to and from the C50 (former A30) to the A30 dual carriageway. Movements to and from the westbound carriageway necessitate crossing the eastbound carriageway and its oncoming fast moving traffic.
In order to improve safety for road users the Highways Agency proposes to close the existing central reserve crossing point, eliminating the right turn off the A30 and preventing access from the C50 roundabout for westbound traffic.
As an alternative for westbound traffic a new two-way slip is to be constructed to the east, connecting with the existing Barton Head overbridge, which carries a minor county road coming in from the south.
At Five Mile Hill Cross, where the slip road meets the C50, a signal controlled junction would be provided.
The principal aim of the proposals is to reduce accidents and improve overall safety for vehicle users. The advantages of the scheme include best fit with the local landscape, together with minimal land take and environmental impact.
Other advantages are improved safety at the Five Mile Hill Cross junction and minimal disruption during construction. Using an existing bridge significantly reduces costs for the scheme.
