The Project
The Highways Agency carried out maintenance on the carriageway and several bridges between Junctions 16 and 17 of the M6, south of Sand Bach Services, in Cheshire.
Areas of the carriageway had deteriorated over the last few years resulting in frequent emergency repairs. Those patch repairs were no longer adequate to cope with the volume of traffic and certain sections of the motorway needed to be reconstructed. In addition, repairs to a number of bridges were required.
The works started on site at the beginning of June 2005 and were substantially completed By 10 December 2005, six weeks earlier than the advertised completion date of mid January 2006.
We have achieved the following:
Road Renewals
- resurfacing of 18 km of carriageway and hard shoulder
- replacement of 7.5 km of safety fencing
- replacement of 20 km of white lines and reflective road studs
- reinstatement of the detector loops for monitoring traffic congestion and road surface conditions which are disrupted by the works, and
- repairs to the motorway drainage
Structures
- replacement of the piers of one bridge over the motorway
- extensive concrete repairs for another bridge over the motorway
- complete renewal of the waterproofing systems and surfacing for the decks of five bridges carrying the motorway, and
- renewal of safety barrier in the vicinity of all seven bridges
All the works were undertaken as part of the ongoing renewal and maintenance programme for this busy section of the M6 through Cheshire.
