The Project

The A419/A417 trunk road is a strategic route linking the M4 and M5 motorways. Most of the route had already been improved but Commonhead Junction was one of the remaining bottlenecks.

The Highways Agency proposed a new flyover at the junction to improve safety and reduce congestion.

The new A419 Commonhead Junction is a two-level junction. The dual carriageway A419 is carried via an embankment over the existing roundabout to allow trunk road traffic to flow freely over the roundabout. The A419 at Commonhead was originally constructed to accommodate a future flyover improvement and the previously existing A419 approaches to the roundabout have been used as slip roads in the new layout.

Two bridges have been constructed to carry the A419 over the junction. Noise fencing and screen planting have been provided adjacent to the flyover and on the bund to the south and east of Liden.

Work started in September 2005 and the new flyover opened to traffic on 5 February 2007.
