A36 Skew Railway Bridge, Salisbury

Innovation award

The contract for Skew Bridge allows the contractor, designer and the Highways Agency to work together to deliver a project in partnership. This enables the contractor to have an early involvement in the design development.

As a result it was identified that traditional construction techniques would not be viable due to the duration of available railway access. Therefore a totally different approach was necessary and a new solution was developed.

This consisted of constructing the new bridge decks on steel runners on the Salisbury side of the railway line. These were then slid into place across the railway lines during Saturday night / Sunday morning railway closures. The temporary steel runners weighed 105 tonnes and also had to be lifted into place during an over night railway closure.

The pre-constructed bridge deck was suspended from a frame and then pulled on brass skates along the steel runners and across the railway. When correctly aligned the new footbridge was lowered into its permanent position.

Following completion of the first bridge slide, the temporary steelwork nd frames were dismantled and re-erected on the north side and the process was repeated.

This is one of the first times that this technique has been used. This was recognised when the bridge slide received the Merit Award for Innovation by the Institution of Civil Engineers.
