Works Information

A36 Skew Railway Bridge, Salisbury

Works Information

The Skew Railway Bridge improvement scheme will improve the safety of the bridge for pedestrians, cyclists motorists and rail users. The works consist of two new separate cycle/footbridges, one on either side of the existing bridge, which provide wider footways, cycleways and much stronger parapets. The majority of the work being carried out is not visible from the road side and much has had to be done at night when the trains have stopped running.

Work commenced in June 2003 and was expected to last for 45 weeks, but the scheme has been subject to delays caused by poor ground conditions and adverse weather. However, all critical structural operations have now been completed and it is intended that the scheme will finish before the end of September 2004.

Key Information

Most of the work has been carried out at off-peak times. Inevitably, however, there will be some delays and road users are asked to allow more time for their journeys.

Weekend road closures are undertaken only when absolutely necessary. Details of full road closures are advertised on site and can be obtained by calling 08457 504030. At these times traffic will be diverted along the A3094.

There will continue to be some limited overnight working, but noise levels are strictly controlled. Brick Lane remains permanently closed to vehicles.

Safety Through Roadworks:

Eleven roadworkers were killed in Highways Agency roadworks between October 2000 and February 2002 by moving traffic. This equates to a 1 in 1000 chance of being killed. The Highways Agency, with the support of the Driving Standards Agency and the Department for Transport, has created six messages to raise driver awareness to help prevent accidents:

  • Keep to the speed limit it is there for your safety
  • Get into the correct lane in good time dont keep switching
  • Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks
  • Be alert for works traffic leaving or entering roadworks
  • Keep a safe distance there could be queues in front
  • Observe all signs they are there to help you.

If you require any further information about the works please telephone the Highways Agency Project Sponsor, Colin Bird on 0117 372 8068 or Highways Agency Information Line on 08457 50 40 30.
