The Project

The M40 / A404 Junction at Handy Cross is situated on the southern outskirts of High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. It suffered from a high level of congestion and long queues of traffic, particularly during peak travel times.

We have addressed this issue by separating local and long distance traffic at the junction. To achieve this we have constructed:

  • A new dedicated left turn slip lane between the A404 Marlow Bypass and the Oxford-bound M40;
  • Additional lanes to the M40 slip roads entering the roundabout;
  • An additional lane between the A404 Marlow Hill and the London-bound M40; and
  • A five lane cross link to assist traffic movements between the M40 and the A404(S).

Work on the scheme started on 26 October 2005. Widening of the existing slip roads and the five lane crosslink were completed in March 2007. The new dedicated left turn slip was completed in May 2007.

More details about the project and what it will achieve can be found under Background Information in the right hand menu.

Scheme Updates

The Next Few Months

Work is substantially complete but there are still a number of small things to be finished including tidying up and taking away the temporary site offices. We aim to have everything completed within the next 2 months.
