Tunnel and Safety Consultation Group

View of Tunnel

A Tunnel Design and Safety Group has been set up to guide the design and operation of the tunnels. It takes advice from a range of specialists engineers from the Highways Agency, Atkins, Mott MacDonald, the Environment Agency, and Hampshire and Surrey County Councils, and from both counties' police, fire and ambulance services.

The Group oversees the design of the tunnels, and operating and maintenance procedures for the range of safety features that will be included, encompassing the systems for ventilation, lighting, drainage, fire safety, public address and radio communications, traffic surveillance, traffic control, and plant monitoring and control.

It will also agree not just the basic design of the tunnels, but the approach roads and service buildings. In due course, the procedures for the safe operation of the tunnel will be developed and tested, before opening, in a full emergency exercise.
