The Project

In early 2005, the Highways Agency undertook road improvements at the A27 Ashcombe Roundabout, near Lewes. These included partially signalising the roundabout, improving access onto the roundabout from Lewes and providing a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.

The improvements are designed to reduce the speed of traffic on the A27 approaching the roundabout. This will allow traffic on the A277 from Lewes to join the A27 with less difficulty than currently encountered. The layout of the roundabout has been changed and traffic signal control provided. A permanent speed limit of 50 mph has also been introduced in the vicinity of the roundabout.

A new signalised crossing has also been provided for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the A27 and, following Highways Agency policy, high skid resistance surfacing was also applied where appropriate.
