A27 Ashcombe Roundabout Improvements

Information Leaflet, November 2004

What is being proposed?

In early 2005, the Highways Agency will undertake road improvements at the A27 Ashcombe Roundabout, near Lewes. This will include partially signalising the roundabout, improving access onto the roundabout from Lewes and providing a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. The duration of the project is anticipated to be four months.

What is involved and why is it necessary?

The improvements are designed to reduce the speed of traffic on the A27 approaching the roundabout. This will allow traffic on the A277 from Lewes to join the A27 with less difficulty than currently encountered. The layout of the roundabout will be changed and traffic signal control provided. A permanent speed limit of 50 mph will also be introduced in the vicinity of the roundabout.

A new signalised crossing will be also provided for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the A27 and, following Highways Agency policy, high skid resistance surfacing will be applied where appropriate.

How will the works affect me?

During construction, a range of traffic management measures will be used to reduce the impact of the works on the public.

It is recommended that road users affected by the works allow extra time or vary their journey if possible.
