The Project

The A21 Lamberhurst Bypass was opened on 23rd March 2005 by David Jamieson MP, Under Secretary of Sate at the Department for Transport.

The bypass removes approximately two thirds of the Trunk Road traffic, 16,000 vehicles a day, from the centre of Lamberhurst, reducing delays and congestion and improving the quality of life for residents. The scheme includes a land bridge or "green bridge" which carries the access drive to the National Trust's Scotney Castle park and gardens over the Bypass. The bridge not only carries the drive but is wide enough for planting on each side of the drive which provides a corridor for wildlife over the bypass.

Improvements to existing junctions on the A21 in Lamberhurst that physically could not be carried out before the Bypass opened were completed June 2005.

In partnership with Kent County Council traffic calming works were carried out on the old A21 through the village in Autumn 2005.

Five Year After study

As part of our ongoing programme of Post Opening Project Evaluation (POPE) this scheme has been reviewed at one and five years after opening.  The studies compare the outturn effects of this scheme to the predicted impacts.
