The Project
This section of the A1089, approximately 1.5 km long, is a 2-lane dual carriageway without hardshoulder and was constructed across Tilbury Marshes in the late 1970's. It joins the A13 Trunk Road at Baker Street Interchange and provides a strategic link between the M25 and the docks at Tilbury. Due to this link, this road is heavily used by Heavy Goods Vehicles. As such the road condition has detoriated significantly and urgently requires repair. This maintenance scheme will re-profile the carriageway and will reduce the severity of the carriageway undulations. At the same time, existing safety barriers and street lighting and drainage will be replaced where necessary.
Supplementary Information Sheet for Hauliers
The essential maintenance works taking place from 29 October 2004 to mid December include a 40mph speed limit, lane closures and contra-flow working. As the existing carriageway is already limited, width restrictions will be in place to allow for contra-flow systems with mandatory safety zones to protect the workforce and other road users.
For this reason, the width restriction imposed on the A1089 through the works will be 3.3 metres. Any vehicles exceeding this width must follow the procedures below.
Vehicles with loads exceeding 3.3 metres travelling south (towards Tilbury) must:
- Pull into the first lay-by as signed.
- Call the number provided in the lay-by.
- Follow the further instructions on the phone and wait for an escort.
Vehicles with loads exceeding 3.3 metres travelling north (towards A13) must:
- Wait inside the Port of Tilbury.
- Call the number provided at the gate.
- Follow the further instructions on the phone and wait for an escort.
Thank you for you assistance and patience during these works. We apologise for any inconvenience these temporary restrictions may cause.
