A1089 Marshfoot Interchange to Asda Roundabout
Major Maintenance
The A1089 Marshfoot Interchange carries more than 12,000 vehicles each day. The road surface is coming to the end of its useful life and needs repair. This work is an absolute necessity to prevent it deteriorating further and to make sure that it stays in a safe condition for many years to come. The roadside drainage also requires attention to prevent damage to the road.
The work
The work will to start in late October 2004, and is expected to be completed by the middle of December 2004.
The work involves:
- low noise carriageway resurfacing;
- improved road markings and signing;
- upgrading the existing street lighting;
- widening northbound and southbound laybys ;
- drainage works;
- safety fencing works;
- new anti dazzle fencing in the central reservation.
Traffic management
A 40-mile per hour speed restriction will be in place while the work is being done to ensure that motorists and road workers are safe.
There will also be a temporary suspension of the existing 7.5 tonnes weight restriction in St Chad's Road for the duration of the works.
The work will continue for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to complete it in the shortest time with minimal inconvenience to the public.
We will provide a free recovery service to help broken-down vehicles.
There will be a contraflow in place (traffic travelling on the opposite carriageway), and various slip road closures.
There will be at least one full overnight weekend carriageway closure in each direction. The lay-bys alongside both carriageways will be closed during the roadworks.

Avoiding delays
Delays are expected, especially during the morning and evening peak times and at weekends. All drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.Before you start a journey, you could contact the Highways Agency Information Line 08457 50 40 30, or check this website for up-to-date travel bulletins.
The result of the work
The work will greatly extend the life of the road and provide a quieter, smootherand safer running surface, which will benefit both drivers and local residents.
Construction sites and unauthorised access
Construction sites can be dangerous places for people who are not familiar with them, particularly children. The contractor will be taking steps to prevent unauthorised access to the site during the work. All members of the public, particularly pedestrians and cyclists should take extra care when they are passing the works.
If you breakdown within the roadworks, turn on your hazard lights and stay with your vehicle. One of our breakdown trucks will tow you to a safe place free of charge.
We will do all we can to keep delays and disruption to a minimum. Please be patient and understanding during this necessary work to ensure that this section of the A1089 is improved and stays in a safe condition for many years to come.
Drivers of Abnormal and/or Wide Loads
All drivers of abnormal and/or wide loads of 2.9m (9'6") and over are required to contact Essex Police Abnormal Loads Department on 01245 452414 to advise of their intended travel through the site.
For the duration of the roadworks drivers of such vehicles will be required to wait at specified locations as directed and they will then be escorted through.
"Today's roadworks are tomorrow's better roads"
Mouchel Parkman have designed this work and will supervise it on behalf of the Highways Agency. Interserve will carry out the construction work.
