Maintenance, February 2004

M1 Junctions 1 to 2 Maintenance

Near Hendon, work starts February 2004

The Highways Agency is responsible for the management of the motorway and trunk road network in England. This leaflet explains the planned major roadworks on the M1 between junctions 1 and 2 on both carriageways.

The M1 in the Hendon area carries more than 49,000 vehicles each day. The road surface is coming to the end of its useful life and needs to be repaired. This work is an absolute necessity to prevent it from deteriorating further and to ensure that it stays in a safe and serviceable condition for many years to come.

The work

The work is programmed to start in February 2004, and is expected to be completed by mid-April 2004.

The work involves:

  • repairing and resurfacing the carriageway;
  • providing a low-noise road surface;
  • repairing the electronic signalling system.
  • replacing the safety fencing;
  • repairing the drainage system;
  • maintaining bridges;

Traffic management

A 40-mile-per-hour speed restriction will be in place to ensure motorists and road workers are safe while this work is being carried out.

The work will continue for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so it can be completed in the shortest time with minimal inconvenience to the public.

We will keep two lanes open in each direction during peak periods. During off peak periods it will be necessary to reduce the traffic lanes on each carriageway to one lane. Carriageway and slip road closures may also be required for limited periods during which diversion routes will be provided.

We will provide a free recovery service to help broken-down vehicles.CCTV monitoring will be used to make sure that any delays orincidents are dealt with quickly, and safety cameras will enforce thespeed restriction. The hard shoulder will be used for traffic and therewill be narrow lanes. There will also be some closures of the slip roadsat junction 1.

Avoiding delays

Delays are expected, especially during the morning and evening peaktimes and at weekends. Motorists should allow extra time for journeysat peak hours.

Before you start your journey, you should contact the HighwaysAgency Information Line 08457 50 40 30.

The result of the work

The work will provide a quieter and smoother running surface,and maintain safety, benefitting both drivers and local residents.

Construction sites and unauthorised access

Construction sites can be dangerous places for people whoare not familiar with them, particularly children. The contractorwill be taking steps to prevent unauthorised access to the siteduring the work.

If you breakdown within the roadworks, turn on your hazard lights and stay with your vehicle. One of our break down trucks will tow you to a safe place free of charge.

We will do all we can to keep delays and disruption to a minimum. Please be patient and understanding during this necessary work to ensure that the M1 between junctions 1 and 2 is refurbished and stays in a safe condition for many years to come.
