The Project
The Principal Inspection on the A14 Orwell Bridge, near Ipswich, has been completed nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. All traffic management, including the 40mph speed restriction, is expected to be removed by Friday morning (15 July).
Hard work and good weather have both played key roles in completing the Principal Inspection on the A14 Orwell Bridge early. This was our chance to give the structure a thorough inspection, and to ensure it remains safe and in good condition for traffic.
By using some of the latest technology, including radiographic and sonar equipment, as well as abseil techniques, we've been able to complete the work in less time while closely inspecting the exterior of the bridge.
During the inspection no major problems have been identified. Any remedial work identified will be programmed for the next financial year.
Overnight work between 2200 and 0500 is scheduled to lift the traffic management on the A14 eastbound carriageway from Wednesday 13 July, and from the A14 westbound carriageway from Thursday 14 July. Work will also remove the temporary safety fencing along the bridge, which was installed for the safety of the inspection teams.
