The Project
This section of the A12 carriageway surface was reaching the end of its useful life and if we did nothing, more frequent emergency repairs would have been necessary, causing traffic disruption. Now that the work is completed, the road should last for many years before any more maintenance is required. Lighting was also installed to improve safety at night on this stretch of the A12.
The work took place on both carriageways of the A12 at the Ingatestone Bypass between the A12/B1002 Trueloves Interchange (Junction 13) and the A12/B1002 Furze Hill Interchange (Junction 14), a distance of just over a mile. This included the southbound exit slip road at Junction 13. Some work was also required on the Fryerning Lane Bridge over the A12.
The works included:
- Strengthening and resurfacing of the carriageway with low noise surfacing
- Installation of hard strips at the sides of the carriageway for vehicles to use in the event of a breakdown
- The closure of two lay-bys and the improvement of three others
- Improvement of the drainage system
- Repairs to Fryerning Lane Overbridge
- Installation of street lighting to improve road safety.
The diversion of British Telecom cables to make way for the roadworks was carried out overnight to reduce disruption to traffic. The main work started in October 2005 and finished in April 2006.
