Scheme Background

A12 Kelveden to Marks Tey Major Maintenance

WORK STARTS TO RESURFACE THE A12 BETWEEN KELVEDON AND MARKS TEY, NR COLCHESTER, ESSEX

The next phase of work to resurface the A12 is due to start on 20th September 2004. The work is due to be completed in early December 2004. The work is to repair worn surfaces of both carriageways between the J24 Kelvedon north junction and the J25 Marks Tey Junction.

Both carriageways will be resurfaced with quiet surfacing to reduce traffic noise and surface spray, and weak sections will be strengthened. Road drainage will be improved by creating V-shaped channels at the edge of the carriageway with pollution control valves installed at the Domsey Brook Outfalls.

Two new lay-bys with separation islands to protect users from traffic will replace the existing poorly located lay-bys. All safety fencing will be replaced to current standards.

The existing Old London Road service road at Marks Tey will be extended from CF Andersons to 286 London Road. Plans will also be published to close the accesses to the A12 over this length for safety reasons.

This resurfacing work is similar to that carried out last year on the Witham Bypass.

During the work, there will be two traffic lanes in use in each direction during the day and one lane each way at night. The existing lanes are being widened and hard strips will be provided on both sides of the carriageways. In future, this will make driving along the road safer and help to relieve congestion caused by broken down vehicles.

There will be several overnight slip road closures at J24, Kelvedon North junction and at J25, Marks Tey junction. Some overnight closures of Easthorpe Road will also be needed when work is being carried out on the adjacent southbound carriageway. All closures will be signed in advance on the road affected.

In early September the Highways Agency will be advising drivers and residents of the start of the scheme by placing signs on the A12, advertisements in local newspapers and with publicity on local radio and in the papers. Residents living close to the A12 will receive letters explaining how the scheme will affect them and also a contact telephone number for any queries they may have.

Drivers will be advised to allow extra time for journeys on the A12 while the work is underway, or to travel outside peak periods if possible. The A12 is a busy route, and delays of up to 30 minutes could occur during the busiest periods. It is better to travel outside these periods if possible.

The Highways Agency's Information Line, 08457 50 40 30 (Local Rate) can be contacted if you have any queries about this scheme.
