Traffic Management

A14 Rookery Crossroads Grade Separated Junction

Traffic Management During the Scheme

During the construction work on the A14 Rookery Crossroads, there will be a number of phases of traffic management. These phases will enable Highways Agency workers to complete work in a number of areas needed to finish the scheme.

Below are brief explanations of the different phases of traffic management that will occur during the scheme. We will keep you up to date on any changes that may occur, in particular on the dates when the various phases will be starting.

The Traffic England Map is updated regularly and should inform you of any particular problems or delays. Access the Traffic England Map by clicking on Traffic Information and select the East Midlands region.

Two Mile Spinney

Phase 1 (November 2004)

A new temporary carriageway will be constructed north of the existing A14. Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto the new temporary carriageway to allow construction of the new eastbound carriageway. As such, traffic will no longer be able to turn right into Rougham. Instead, a diversion route through Beyton will be signposted. Westbound traffic and traffic from Rougham towards Bury St Edmunds will be unaffected.

Phase 2 (June 2005)

Westbound traffic will be diverted onto the new eastbound carriageway to allow construction of the new westbound carriageway. At this point, the junction with the U8003 will be closed permanently. Traffic wishing to travel west to Bury St Edmunds will be able to use the new junction at Rougham. Eastbound traffic continues to use the temporary carriageway and signed diversion route to Rougham.

Phase 3 (August 2005)

Traffic is able to use the new road alignment. Some traffic management will be in place to allow construction of the tie-ins to the existing road and removal of temporary carriageways.

Rookery Crossroads

Phase 1a (November 2004)

Access to and from the A14 on the south side of the road is closed, with westbound traffic to Rougham diverted via Beyton and traffic from Rougham to Bury St Edmunds diverted via the U8003. The A14 westbound carriageway is narrowed to allow construction of the new underpass and southern connector road.

Temporary carriageways will be constructed between Sow Lane (U6321) and the A14 to allow eastbound access and egress to Rougham Industrial Estate, and enable construction of part of the new alignment of Sow Lane, northern connector road and new eastbound carriageway.

The new access to Ravenwood Hall Hotel is constructed, with access to the hotel, Blackthorpe Barn and a residential property available throughout this phase via the signed diversion route. Temporary carriageways are constructed between the existing westbound carriageway and the new bridge for the next construction phase.

Phase 1b (March/April 2005)

Westbound traffic is diverted onto the new temporary carriageway across the new bridge. The new southern connector road will be operational, and westbound traffic to and from Rougham can now use this section of the junction. Eastbound traffic is as for Phase 1a.Temporary carriageways are constructed for the next construction phase.

Phase 1c (June 2005)

Eastbound traffic is diverted onto the new westbound carriageway across the new bridge, which will run in contraflow, to allow construction of the remainder of the new eastbound carriageway and the new alignment of Sow Lane uinder the A14. Access to Rougham Industrial Estate will remain on temporary carriageways.

Phase 2 (June 2005)

The new junction is operationally complete. Some traffic management will still be in place to allow the construction of the new eastbound carriageways and the tie-ins to the existing carriageway, and the removal of the temporary carriageways.
