The Project
Undertake Improvements to approx 85 km (50 miles) of motorway between Leicester and Chesterfield.
Assess the potential of Active Traffic Management (ATM) technology and other improvement techniques as appropriate to increase capacity and to ensure best use of the existing motorway.
Provision of a Bypass for the village of Kegworth.
The Schemes
M1 J21 - J21a
- Scheme to provide free flow links between the M1 and the M69 and relieve congestion at J21.
- Scheme to recommence development of options in 2014/15 with a provisional programmed start of works 2017/18.
M1 J21a - J23a
- Scheme to relieve congestion through use of hard shoulder running.
- Scheme to recommence development of options post 2018 with a provisional programmed start of works post 2020.
M1 J23a - J24a
- Scheme to reduce the weaving of traffic between the M1, A42 and J24 (A453 / A50), relieve congestion and provide a bypass for the village of Kegworth taking traffic from the A6 to the M1 / A50 without going through J24. Proposal is to widen the parallel A453 and provide a new J23a.
- The scheme to improve the M1 between junctions 23a and 25 falls into the category of schemes expected to be delivered after 2015. The timetable for these schemes will be considered as part of the DaSTS (Delivering a Sustainable Transport System) process under which we will be defining our longer term investment priorities. This process is described in our November 2008 document Delivering a Sustainable Transport System.
M1 J24 - J25
- Scheme to reduce congestion through he use of hard shoulder running.
- The scheme to improve the M1 between junctions 23a and 25 falls into the category of schemes expected to be delivered after 2015. M1 J25 - J28 Widening
On Monday 6th August 2007, the Government decided to proceed with the widening of the M1 between J25 and J28. Work on this section started on October 29, 2007, with Start of Works public exhibitions held on October 18, 25 and 27, 2007.
A copy of the Decision letter is available from the publications page.
Works are due for completion in late 2010.
