Traffic Management

Traffic Management details for the work taking place on the M1 J25-28 Widening scheme is available on the M1 J25-28 Widening Traffic Management page.

The Project

Improvements to this section of the M1 were originally developed as part of a larger scheme to widen approx 85 km (50 miles) of motorway between Leicester and Chesterfield J21 - 30).

Subsequently the scheme was split into shorter segments and a review was carried out into the potential for hard shoulder running as an alternative to widening to increase capacity and to ensure best use of the existing motorway.

Ministers announced in January 2009 that improvements on the M1 between J21a-23a offered relatively low value for money and would not be taken forward at the current time.  Improvements between J21-21a and J23a-24 and J24-25  were identified as schemes that would be rolled out after 2014 with the timing to be determined following a review of longer term priorities which is currently under way as part of the Department for Transport's  "Delivering a Sustainable Transport System" process.  This process is described in the Department's 2008 document "Delivering a Sustainable Transport System".

Provision of a Bypass for the village of Kegworth is closely linked with the improvements proposed for M1 J23a-24.

The Schemes

M1 J21 - J21a
  • Scheme to provide free flow links between the M1 and the M69 and relieve congestion at J21.
M1 J21a - J23a
  • Scheme to relieve congestion through use of hard shoulder running.   This section is identified as lower priority than other sections.
M1 J23a - J24a
  • Scheme to reduce the weaving of traffic between the M1, A42 and J24 (A453 / A50), relieve congestion and provide a bypass for the village of Kegworth taking traffic from the A6 to the M1 / A50 without going through J24.  Proposal is to widen the parallel A453 and provide a new J23a.
M1 J24 - J25
  • Scheme to reduce congestion through he use of hard shoulder running.
