Route Description
A1 Peterborough to Blyth
Route description
The route runs from the recently completed section of A1 motorway near Peterborough in the south to the A1(M) Doncaster bypass at Blyth in the north. It is 118 km in length (73 miles).
The standard of the route is a rural dual two-lane carriageway all-purpose road throughout its whole length. However, despite this, the quality and characteristics of the route vary along its length.
The two lane carriageways benefit from the provision of hardstrips along parts of the route, with a short section having hardshoulders. Carriageways along part of the route are constructed in concrete.
Laybys are provided along the route to varying standards. The route has both SOS and AA telephones with marker posts provided along the whole length.
Grade-separated junctions along the route provide both full access, and in some cases, only partial access to the route. There are numerous at-grade junctions with side roads including six roundabouts. The route also provides for direct private accesses to dwellings, farms, petrol stations, businesses, and restaurants.
The route is generally unlit except for short lengths at Elkesley, Colsterworth, Stibbington and the six at-grade roundabouts.
